Project Background

The customer is a Thailand-based industrial adhesive solution provider serving precision manufacturing sectors. Their daily operation involves repackaging 3M-brand AB two-component epoxy (original 1L tin can packaging) into 25ml or 50ml dispensing cartridges for downstream end-users.

Given the relatively small daily output, the customer had long relied on manual filling. However, as quality requirements from their clients tightened, three critical pain points emerged:

  1. Insufficient precision: Manual plunger filling resulted in ±5%–8% random errors in the A/B mix ratio, leading to inconsistent bonding strength in final applications.

  2. High material waste: 3M adhesives are extremely costly. Residue left in cans, ratio deviations, and spillage during manual handling caused significant monthly financial losses.

  3. Mismatched investment: Fully automatic high-speed lines offered far more capacity than needed, while requiring a capital outlay disproportionate to the actual production volume.


Needs Assessment & Strategic Pivot

Initially, we proposed our standard model WEFLL-AB-CAR-F001, with a proven output of 700–900 cartridges/hour – a workhorse in the chemical industry.

However, after in-depth discussions, the customer shared two major concerns:

  • Excessive capacity: Their actual need was only 200–300 cartridges/day. A Semi-automated line would remain idle most of the time.

  • Budget constraints: The procurement budget was less than 60% of the standard machine's price.

Rather than walking away, WEFILL TECH responded swiftly and decisively. Our strategy: reduce non-essential automation, but enhance core precision. Our engineering team immediately designed a benchtop, semi-automatic AB two-component filling and capping machine – purpose-built to address the customer's real-world constraints.

Technical Solution & Process Workflow

This customized machine abandons complex conveyor systems and full PLC automation, returning to the essence of precision dosing. The architecture is built around pneumatic-driven metering pumps with mechanical synchronization.

Core Process Flow:

  1. Closed-loop material feeding: The original 3M tin can is directly connected to the metering pump inlet via a custom adapter. The entire path is sealed, preventing moisture absorption or curing that causes material loss.

  2. Precise metering & synchronized filling: A high-precision piston metering pump, coupled with pneumatic cylinders and mechanical hard stops, ensures a constant A/B ratio regardless of pressure fluctuations. Simultaneously, an automated lifting fixture raises the cartridge from the bottom during filling, eliminating trapped air bubbles.

  3. Semi-automatic plunger insertion: After filling, the operator places the piston plug on the cartridge opening, and the machine's pneumatic pressing fixture completes the sealing – combining simplicity with consistent capping quality.


Results & Customer Value

The custom solution passed customer acceptance smoothly and is now in full production at their Thai facility. The key benefits delivered:

  • Budget-friendly precision: The final machine price was only 50% of the standard WEFLL-AB-CAR-F001 – perfectly matching the customer's cost target and dramatically lowering the barrier to automation for smaller operations.

  • Material savings at the core: Thanks to the piston pump's repeatable accuracy and the closed feeding path, filling precision is controlled within ±1%. The effective utilization rate per 1L tin of 3M adhesive exceeds 99%, virtually eliminating expensive waste.

  • Compact footprint, easy operation: The benchtop design occupies less than 0.5㎡ and fits flexibly into a lab or small-batch workshop. Operators can become proficient after minimal training, with no need for dedicated maintenance engineers.
